History of 3D Metal Printing Magazine

  • 2010s

    By the 2010s, the staff of MetalForming magazine, and its parent, the Precision Metalforming Association, was recognizing and reporting on advancements in metal AM and its increased pace of development and adoption. We began reaching out to industry contacts and exploring the metal 3D printing landscape.

  • 2013

    In June, MetalForming magazine hosted a webinar: Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing for Metalformers. With 514 registrants, the webinar demonstrated widespread interest in AM.

  • 2015

    Seeing a need for a publication covering the metal AM industry, we partnered with Meckler Media, then a producer of 3D printing events, to launch 3D Metal Printing magazine, and acquired the domain name.

  • 2016

    3D Metal Printing published the first of its quarterly print issues; launched its website,; and debuted a monthly e-newsletter. The inaugural Spring 2016 issue, featuring a Pratt & Whitney engine part on the cover, detailed metal AM in the aerospace industry. Our editors, along with expert columnists, explored the current state of the technology as well as its challenges and potential.

  • 2016

    3D Metal Printing presented its first-annual 3D Metal Printing Experience & Tech Tour, August 18-19 in Livonia, MI. Plant tours included Linear AMS and Hi-Tech Mold & Engineering.

  • 2017

    In February, to expand its social-media presence, 3D Metal Printing debuted its mobile app, available for iPhone and Android devices.

  • 2017

    Recognizing the rising use of metal AM across the Americas, on June 14 in Monterrey, Mexico, 3D Metal Printing debuted its Mexico Additive Manufacturing Conference.

  • 2017

    3D Metal Printing hosted its first webinar in June, titled Atomization Improvements for Additive Manufacturing Applications,offering insights from Praxair.

  • 2017

    In November, following previous partnership agreements with various industry organizations and events, 3D Metal Printing became a media partner of Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) Education and Training Conference. 3DMP also maintains partnerships with RAPID + TCT, formnext, IMTS and FABTECH.

  • 2018

    3D Metal Printing expanded publication of its e-newsletter, covering industry news and technology developments, to twice monthly—it currently boasts 20,000-plus subscribers.
